Last week we talked about motor upgrades for XMODS®, and this week I’d like to talk about a battery charger upgrade. Generally, the charger that comes with your RC vehicle is going to be slow and only viable for a single battery charge. If you are competing in a day long, or a multi-day RC car racing event, then you need a charger that is capable of either handling a multi-battery charge, or that is capable of charging your batteries in a matter of minutes instead of a matter of hours.
Competition battery chargers are going to be pricier than a simple replacement battery charger for your RC vehicle, but if you compete in RC car events, or if you want to max out your play time, then a competition battery charger is worth the extra money. One model that has received good reviews is the Pulsar Competition 3 Charger System.
The Pulsar Competition 3 Charger System, manufactured by Associated Electronics, retails for about $264.99. It is capable of charger between one and eight NiMH/NiCd cells or between one and three LiPo cells. It offers users two different charge modes, multi-step and linear with Delta Peaks between five and 95 mV. What is great about this charger is that it has a digital display that keeps you informed about the capacity, discharge time and the average voltage.
When buying an associated electronics battery charger you will want to make sure that it is right for your electric RC car. Keep in mind that every brand from Tyco to CEN will have a recommended battery charger.
