Getting Started with Nitro RC Cars at
RC Cars Hobby
They can go from zero to 80 mph faster than you can say Nitro RC Cars and sound like swarms of killer bees!
Often called gas-powered cars, nitro cars used to be for seasoned drivers only, but with improved nitro gas technology,
nitro car kits have become popular with beginners as well has veteran hobbyists. They are easier to maintain and tune,
look and operate more like real full size-cars, and come in both off-road and on-road models.
The on-board battery that powers the vital radio gear runs on a battery, so remember to recharge it!
More about that later.
A model kit adds an entirely new dimension to your enjoyment of Nitro RC cars. If you have experience with electric models
and want a new challenge, go nitro!
THE BASICS
Like electric cars, Nitro RC Cars require a radio system and tools, plus specific parts for assembly.
GLOW PLUGS
The glow plug
(sometimes called glo-plug) of your engine needs power applied externally until the engine can heat it up from within. The glow plug igniter was created for this purpose. The glow plug igniter is, in turn, powered by a battery or two. If the battery does not work, then the glow plug igniter will not feed the necessary power to the glow plug and the engine will not start.
The Megatech #3 All-Purpose Glow Plug (fits #8) .
is an all purpose glow plug is from the purest platinum iridium and used with 5-40% nitro content fuels.

Receiver Battery
Nitro RC cars need a separate battery to power the radio gear. Replacing batteries can become expensive, so most
hobbyists
use a rechargeable receiver batter which also requires a charger. A rechargeable receiver pack and charger may look pricey
in the beginning, but it will save you money in the long run.
Nitro Starters
There are two types of starters for nitro RC cars
pull and non-pull, with pros and cons to each. If a starter is not
included in the kit, you will need either a hand-held, 12V starter or an electric starter box. Both types of starters have
spinning, rubber wheels that, when placed against the engine's flywheel, cause the engine's crankshaft to rotate and fire
the engine into life.
Most entry-level and "play" kits include pull-starters. The pull start handle
(akin to starting a lawn mower) means that you can start your engine anywhere, and you would not need a starter box.
The addition of the pull start system to the
engine, however, does mean more wear and tear on the unit. If you decide later to use the starter box, you can.
Its a little more expensive than the non-pull start engines, but you do not have the added expense of a starter box if you don't want to purchase one.
Non-pull start has its own advantages for the racer. Without the pull-start, the engine sits lower,
improving the center of
gravity and thus the car's handling. The engine is also lighter.
There is less wear and tear on the unit, so the tuning is
more consistent.
With a non-pull start engine, you must purchase a starter box to turn the flywheel.
You must also have an electrical source to power the starter box, though a gas-oriented track will supply this; if not, you can frequently plug the box into your car battery. A non-pull start engine is a must for serious racing.
New Alternative to a Non-Pull Engine
Get into the action faster with the CEN Racing Roto-Tech Starter.
The CEN Racing Roto-Tech starter has been released to give you an alternative to traditional pull starters.
The Roto-Tech starter includes everything you need to start your truck using an electronic 7.2-volt hand held starting unit (included). This greatly reduces the amount of time and effort spent starting your engine.

NITRO FUEL
Although we say gas-powered, Nitro RC cars are not run on gasoline, the fuel used in most RC cars is a blend of
alcohol, nitromethane and oil. often times called glow fuel.
The 20% blends are formulated specifically for 1/10th scale for racing comes in two different sizes.
20% Nitro Methane Off-Road Fuel quart size
and 20% Nitro Methane Off-Road Fuel (Pint size).
The
30% Monster Horsepower Nitro Fuel blends are used for 1/8th competition racing, on-road and off-road and comes in plastic quart container.
The Platinum Blends contain new lubricants and more oil for for prolonged engine protection while allowing a
low oil content to be run.
This is a must if you are racing your engine
frequently throughout the day.
The result is more power! Recommended for serious racing only!
Trinity makes a
20% Nitro Fuel Platinum Team Blend and a 30% Nitro Fuel Platinum Team Blend
Both Trinity and Megatech manufacture nitro fuel.
All nitro flammable, so treat with care, but it is not nearly as volatile as gasoline. Never use
gasoline in a nitro RC car engine.
Nitro RC Cars are a total blast! Theres nothing like the sound and power you get from nitro-burnin machines, but I
suggest that you start with electric cars. Learn the basics and after that, when you want to go all out, go Nitro RC Cars!
