In todays remote control car hobby, there are 3 main types of engine used in rc cars. Gas, nitro (nitrous), and electric. In this article, we will focus on gas cars rc racing.

The main difference between gas powered remote controlled cars and nitro powered rc cars, is that nitro uses a glow plug, where as gas uses a spark plug, just like a regular car uses in it's engine. As a matter of fact, you can even get working V8 engines, scaled down of course, for your vehicles. The only other real difference between the two engines is that gas powered engines use gasoline, and nitro use a nitrous/oil mix fuel for it's propulsion.

1/4 scale gas powered rc cars are most generally the size preferred, as the larger, heavier vehicles need more power to propel them through the various rigors that the gas cars rc operator commands them to do. 1/5 scale nitro gas rc cars are also available and offer even more power to weight compensation.

Available from several manufacturers, cheap gas rc cars can really be a great deal of work to maintain, as the number of engine parts does increase slightly, but the amount of fun easily offsets this one caveat.

When considering which gas cars rc racer to buy, be sure to check for availability of replacement parts for the entire vehicle. An older style model might not be easy to fix in an accident, because the manufacturer stopped producing the parts for it. Also be sure to check that the major parts like, chassis plate, body shell, suspensions, and transmissions, are available for hop-ups. Hop-ups are the hobby term for upgrades.

The joy of gas power rc cars can be further advanced by getting custom made parts from various specialized manufacturers, or having the parts specially built for your gas cars rc controller. There are kits that can be bought to even control your car with a laptop, while in the field. Perhaps even have a mini-cam on your vehicle.
