Coaxial, FP and CP models, what's the difference...
Electric RC helicopters are not "toys." This is a point that you need to understand before you purchase one. Electric remote control helicopters are complex, challenging to control and require advanced remote control vehicle operating skills. It is because of all of these facts that they make a better hobby for older operators.
There are three main types of electric RC helicopters that you can purchase. The first is the coaxial electric RC helicopter, this is the most advanced model. The second option is the collective pitch RC electric helicopter, it is the mid-skill level variety. Finally, there is the fixed pitch electric helicopter, which is the easiest of the three to operate and control in the air.
Coaxial Electric RC Helicopters
The first type of electric RC helicopters that you can work with is the coaxial electric RC helicopter. This type of remote control helicopter is unique in that it has a double main rotor system. That is, there is a rotor axial and two sets of blades, one stacked on top of the other. These blade sets spin in opposing directions. This gives the helicopter a lot more stability than the single rotor models.
Fixed Pitch Electric RC Helicopter
Another type of electric RC helicopters is the fixed pitch electric RC helicopter, of FP helicopter for short. This model has a single main rotor set up and is a good type of RC helicopter to learn on as it is not as complex as the coaxial electric RC helicopter varieties. However, it will still take some trial and error to figure out how to control this aircraft in mid-air.
Collective Pitch RC Electric Helicopters
Collective Pitch, or CP electric helicopters are slightly more complex than the fixed pitch RC helicopters. They offer a four blade main rotor system, as opposed to the two blade main rotor system used by the fixed pitch varieties. This design is better suited for aerial acrobatics and more complex maneuvers. Since it is a more advanced model it will take a more skilled operator.
When shopping for an electric RC helicopter it is important to think about who will be using it. Generally this type of RC "toy" is best suited for older kids, teens and adults. However, if you are willing to supervise and help control the helicopters, younger RC'ers will also enjoy them.
